What is Summer Comp?
The Northern District Summer Comp is a 6-a-side half field competition run during the fourth term of school. It has been run, and has grown, over the last four years.
The emphasis is on introducing new players to the sport of hockey, getting a bit of exercise after the winter season has completed, and, most importantly, having some good, healthy fun.
What is the format?
Secondary Comp
Tuesday nights
From October 21 to December 2nd – the season is shorter than the mixed and open comps to allow for our private school teams to play the full competition.
For high school players but more experienced primary school players are welcome.
Two divisions of 6 teams each – Division 1 catering for the senior and/or more skilful players and Division 2 catering for the younger participants.
Round robin over the first 5 weeks, followed by two weeks of “finals” in which all teams play both weeks.
Division 1 games start at 7:15pm and 8:05pm and run for 45 minutes.
Division 2 games start at 6:25pm and 7:15pm and run for 45 minutes.
Mixed Comp and Open Comp
Wednesday and Thursday nights
From October 15/16 to December 17/18
For the mixed divisions, two females or children under 15 must be on the field at all times.
For the open division, all players (male or female) must be over 15 at the start of the comp.
Wednesday Nights
Division 2 - Family/Mixed – lower standard, earlier games, aimed at family teams
Division 1 – Mixed - higher standard, later games
Division 2 - Family/Mixed – available for those that prefer Thursdays
Division 1 - Open – highest standard (no more than lower grade mens), generally later games
What is the cost?
The competition provides a cheap option to participate in a team sport. Costs have been based on $4.50 per player per game, allowing for teams of 8 players (only 6 on the field at any one time).
Secondary - $252 per team, team registrations only
Mixed - $360 per team, team registrations only
Open - $360 per team, team registrations only
How do I nominate?
There is a strict limit on the number of teams that will be accepted. Previous years have seen a number of applications rejected.
Only team registrations will be accepted. It is up to you to organise your team. The number of players in your team is your business.
To register complete the appropriate form and e-mail to summercomp@ndhockey.com.au. Payment details are included on the registration forms.
Team managers must ensure waiver forms are completed and handed to the competition organiser for all players before they go onto the field.

Am I insured?
Northern District Hockey Association does not provide any insurance cover and is not liable for any injury.
If you played hockey during winter your club fees should cover your insurance but check with your club. If you didn’t, you will not be insured outside what your school, private or public health cover provides.
Waiver forms must be completed by all players other than NDHA financial players.
What are the rules?
The normal rules of hockey apply with the following modifications:
General- The game is played on half a field with a side board on one side only.
- One umpire will control the game.
- All players are limited to a maximum of two goals.
- Pushing is the only method of propelling the ball.
- No penalty flicks will be awarded.
- No more than six players of a team are allowed on the field at any one time.
- For pools D, E and F only, two females or children under 15 must be on the field at all times.
- Substitutions can occur at any time.
- There is no goalkeeper or kicking fullback.
- A mouth guard and shin pads are compulsory for all players under 18 years old.
- A shirt of the correct team colour must be worn.
- All players play at their own risk. There is no insurance provided by the Northern District Hockey Association Inc apart from that continuing from the winter season to NDHA junior and women club members.
- Games must be completed within the available time slot. Fifty minutes per time slot has been allowed comprising 5 minutes warm up, 20 minutes per half and 5 minutes half time.
- Other than for the commencement of the first game warm up, the siren will sound at the end of each half only. The commencement of the next game or half will occur when umpires and players are ready.
- It is an offence to hit, slap or lift the ball over 10cm in height (see umpire advice).
- A free push to the attacking team one metre outside the circle nearest to the spot where a breach occurs replaces a penalty corner. Only four of the defending team are allowed in the defensive half of the field. All players must be five metres from the free push.
- A free push to the attacking team, taken anywhere within two metres of the corner, is awarded for defenders playing the ball over the base line, either intentionally or unintentionally.
- In order to keep the game flowing the “raised ball” should only be blown when the ball becomes dangerous, when it goes over a stick or when it enters the goal. ie A ball bouncing up on a trap with no-one else in playing distance or a ball being raised slightly on a pass in open area should not be penalised.
- The difference between a slap and a push is sometimes a matter of interpretation. If in doubt, allow the shot to be played. The better the player, the less room there should be for applying discretion.
